11. Market Street Catacombs
One of the remarkable historical locations in Indianapolis, Market Street Catacombs are the different tunnels
located on the northeast corner of Market and Delaware streets in downtown Indianapolis.
Market Street Catacombs which was opened in the late 1800s was a farmers market, it is now a food hall.
The underground tunnels have been constructed centuries ago with limestones and bricks. The tunnel was initially used to transport meat and farm produces through Indianapolis with the primary focus of keeping them cool before refrigeration was introduced. The tunnels contain pits used to store ice.
When the use of electricity became more prevalent in cities across the United States, the use for subterranean storage faded away. But the underground chambers were not completely purposeless as it was late used
in 1911-12 during the cold winter to shelter the homeless in the city when the weather condition got particularly bad.
